A Typical Day in the Life of a Consultant

(Thanks to Costa Tzavaras, Senior Consultant Amrop Hever)

7:00am Check work email before the day gets started. Discover my star candidate on a tough search has just emailed me to say she is pulling out due to 'geographic concerns'. Take note of her mobile number.
7:50am Call the star candidate to convince her to reconsider this opportunity.
8:10am On the train. Reading the morning's news & business happenings; make a note of 2 senior executive appointments in well-known organizations. Check my schedule for the day – first appointment - 9am team meeting.
9:00am Grab a notepad and a coffee, head to internal team meeting – 45 minutes to discuss current search assignments and workloads with research team.
10:00am Head back to my desk to open email and check voicemail. Check my 'to-do' list for the day - I'm trying to get into the habit of planning my days in advance (I learned this from a recent project management course the firm asked us to attend).
10:20am Colleagues come by to say hello and chat about the weekend, the week ahead and office 'stuff'. Really great to work with a friendly team.
10:30am I have a handful of names on a particular assignment that I have yet to call - spent much of last week on the phone/online, identifying names in this highly specialised niche market. Spend the next hour on the phone, leaving voicemails and in 2 cases having live conversations and 'profiling' both individuals as potential candidates. I follow-up both of those calls with an email containing a few details on our search and the Position Specification. Make a note in our database to reconnect with the candidates later in the week.
12:00pm Meet with one of the Partners to review our process on a search. The search is going well and we have a strong list of potential candidates. 10 days to our shortlist meeting with the client...
12:30pm Lunch with friend – I'm told "You have the best job" – I hear this a lot
1:30pm Back to work. Meet with a different Partner to discuss a new assignment – briefing, ideal candidate profile, target sectors discussed.
2:45pm Continue with calls to potential candidates and sources on a search that began last week. Mental note: not much interest yet on this assignment, must rethink strategy.
5:30pm Pre-scheduled reference call on a short-listed candidate. Positive feedback from the referee. Send notes of the call to an Assistant for preparation.
6:05pm Take a call from a Partner – could I attend a meeting tomorrow morning with a new client at their new site on the other side of the city. Must remember to wake up extra early.
